Why is google black today?

I've read a lot of points as to black sites using less energy on CRT monitors. But, I haven't heard the statistics of lcd monitors. Also, Google posted back in August of 2007 that they didn't have intentions of going black. Google always keeps their homepage interesting by celebrating our major holidays, I just want to know from Google why the sudden black today!

Why is google black today?
They're celebrating earth hour....trying to encourage people to turn off their lights for an hour today in order to save energy.

ps....you can go to blackle.com....it's google that's always black. Kind of fun.

Reply:Google's homepage is black for the users from United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada and Denmark to promote Earth Hour, an event that encourages energy conservation. "On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in their local time zone. (...) Given our company's commitment to environmental awareness and energy efficiency, we strongly support the Earth Hour campaign, and have darkened our homepage today to help spread awareness of what we hope will be a highly successful global event," explains Google in a special page created for the event. Earth Hour started last year in Sydney, but this year many cities from all over the world joined the event.

The purpose of the black homepage is not to save energy, but to raise the awareness of the world's environmental problems. Most people will be surprised to see Google's homepage so radically different and will start to wonder if it's a good idea to imitate Google's blackout. Sometimes small actions make a difference, but in this case the key is elsewhere.
Reply:Today is Earth Hour. Which is when everyone turns their lights OFF. to try to help save the environment by cutting down on carbon gas emmisions.

Wikipedia says:

Earth Hour is an international event that asks households and businesses to turn off their lights and non-essential electrical appliances for one hour on the evening of 29 March at 8 pm local time until 9 pm to promote electricity conservation and thus lower carbon emissions.
Reply:On the main page there is a link to their explaination.
Reply:Today at 8:00 'till 9:00, Earth hour happens. Google commemorates holidays and special days with pictures, right? Today black represents that. According to Google,

Google users in the United States will notice today that we "turned the lights out" on the Google.com homepage as a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour. As to why we don't do this permanently - it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display. However, you can do something to reduce the energy consumption of your home PC by joining the Climate Savers Computing Initiative.
