Why is google so popular?

I just dont see why or how Google is so popular ... I have tried the same search on both search engines many times and yahoo always comes up with information relevant to what im searching for....google on the other hand never comes up with anything relevant , really it seems the results you get are just the first random pages that have the words or word you typed in the search block..........ive tried being open minded about it and tried to like it, but its just not my cup of tea. ......... Its almost like because people say google this or google that, it must be popular or cool........, that is so "lamb" like...., ive been using the internet for almost 10 years now since the dial up days, so its not like i havent used a search engine before .........so tell me why is it so popular? try it yourself, run the search engines side by side before you answer, and tell let me know how it goes.

Why is google so popular?
Exactly, I always use yahoo! as my homepage and my search engine. People kept on telling me to use google, but I never listen. i say to them"when you need to check youremail or see who won in basketball, which site do you use, google or yahoo?" No brainer, since I dont think google has a sports section. And like you said, google and yahoo search basically the same thing, so really.......no difference.


What i like yahoo the most is the page, i mean everything you need to for the day(like temperature, etc)its right there. Google is just a plain page with a search engine. Nothing there, really. Most people tell me that google searches more stuff, but as far as I have searched, the results were the same. So, maybe google has one or two more searchs, but really, when is the last time you went through all the pages in a search.....?

you're right in principally stating that it's not much different than other search engines. but there's 5,000 sites just like myspace, so why is it big?

Reply:BOONE, if you just use GOOGLE to search an item then, of course it is no better than any other simple search engine but you probably have NOT HEARD of all the other Google programs, which makes it so POPULAR.

These are just a fewof the many other FREE programs that Google offers. There just is NO comparison with the other excellent search engines that we all use, including Yahoo and TEOMA, Refdesk and many others.





If you say that you notice NO difference it is merely because you have NOT used any of the dozens of Google programs.





Google even has a program especially designed for blind and visually impaired folks. I don't think ANY other search engine even comes close to that kind of service, DO YOU?

Reply:i have been on the internet since what i thought was the internet was really AOL 2.0. Before that, I had a Commodore 64 and an online thing called Q-Link, which grew into AOL. I used to belong to some BBS's that I used my 486 and my blazing fast 2400baud modem to get to.





Why do I like google? it loads fast, indexes billions of pages, has many extra commands to use that i like (cache: site: allinurl: intext: ,etc.) Coming up with a relevant site really depends on the search phrases you use, google lets me put a minus in front on sites i don't want. ( i search for movies, but i don't want pornography, i put: "movies" streaming -porn. I can use advanced search and only find articles about penguins on an .edu domain.

Man me too on the dial up, and the open mind, and I've tired to like google but it just sucks, same with MSN.





What it is, is google results are far too revenue driven. As in what every you search for you get the ones who paid the most rather than what best fits your request.





Yahoo is way better for relevant results, but i sense they are trying to build up their search revenue too so we may loose relevant results with yahoo.

Reply:The reason that people like google so much is that u can search on images, maps, video, news and things posted on the web. Another reason that people like google so much is that it searches for keywords in the descriptions of the sites. If u want a really good search engine use dogpile.com it takes the most relavent sites from searche on google, yahoo, msn ect......
Reply:I think people have come to like Google because of it's simplicity. After all that popularity, more sites were added to the index. Since all those websites are found on Google, it becomes very reliable. By the way, Yahoo is my second favorite search engine.
